Judas Priest, the
heavy metal British rock group, was sued because
their music supposedly contained subliminal messages. The plaintiffs sought $6.2
million dollars for the band's "product liability." Now playing
is one of their
musical reversals. The forward lyrics, played first, say "beyond
the realms of death". The reversed speech, played next and then repeated slower,
is actually clearer than the forward version and seems to say: "I took my life."
The defense successfully argued that, even if subliminal messages were present,
the power of such messages to move people to action has never been proven.
